Meditation Office VS Martial Arts

This great posting contribution is made by Ari Lestariono based on his own experience, observation and research on the correlation of working as employee in implementing martial arts values into daily life. Thus, I believe his contemplation serves as holistic remedies for all of us.

Having the experience working in office as daily job from 9 to 5, I guess that’s what every normal people do, including me. I recall that moment when I was working for Multinational Company back then 10 years ago having a Senior supervisor at the age of around 50+ years , many occasions during meeting time and intense discussions to observe progress of projects, every angles from budgeting, technical, schedule and planning including the how to know avoiding penalties from clients due to our supplier and or subcontractors who tried many times to rip us of, to be honest it is a tough job, being a project guy in multinational company and interfacing with variety of professional came from multi nations. Yet I found it interesting and challenging, in its way to diversify our character being adaptive and subtlety. Of course conflict occur happens and it is normal, what is not normal if you run your project management in smooth pattern, which I find hard to believe happens in realistic life. This article, I would like to share to readers that in “meditate” or being, is a define state of mind in just being, not to think or to expect, that doesn’t mean we are empty head. It’s the state of cool awareness that I learn from my supervisor, during those tough times he never seem panic or tense, always cool.

So  I ask a silly question to him, “What’s the secret boss?’, he only smiles and says softly just being present and only focusing at “moment” the now, that phrase looks awkward to me, since I did not know the true depth meaning, either way I also practice martial arts for years and having to realize and many times my teacher in martial arts says ‘be cool’, meditative, in my head always trying to analyze this or that , what will happen if..? and so on …many minds.

One time I was caught by my supervisor during a tough meeting my mind was floating around trying to anticipate the problems that at the end will and or may not happen, and I was yelled by my boss, that I should only to focus on what he guided, you can’t think all the possibility, it’s in this “now” situation or discussions I should pay attention and do your best, the end result we should not worry, the answer will come up instant moment before the things happens.

After 10 years gone, and I contemplate and meditate myself I could really grasp and understand what he meant those time, just like when you practice martial arts, i.e. given example Aikido, after practicing 10 years I could understand that you just concentrate on the “first take” or initial attack by your partner, at the very precise moment before the attacks hits, you already know the answer and the Universe will take care of it, this philosophy if I survey too many practitioner of martial arts  still doing fighting choreograph trying to look good and thinking always the ending technique, into forms which is alright but after years of training you must grasp the essence, to be in stage of not thinking too much or many minds i.e. like Tom Cruise movie “The Last Samurai”.

Believe me if you put up this practice, the correct one , not only you will gain benefit training in your arts, in daily life and office work you will be more relax and calm and even if tough times in office or you have a tough boss, you will definitely having the intuitive answer that will shock them. Please contemplate about this article and practice it.
