Meditation Office VS Martial Arts

This great posting contribution is made by Ari Lestariono based on his own experience, observation and research on the correlation of working as employee in implementing martial arts values into daily life. Thus, I believe his contemplation serves as holistic remedies for all of us.

Having the experience working in office as daily job from 9 to 5, I guess that’s what every normal people do, including me. I recall that moment when I was working for Multinational Company back then 10 years ago having a Senior supervisor at the age of around 50+ years , many occasions during meeting time and intense discussions to observe progress of projects, every angles from budgeting, technical, schedule and planning including the how to know avoiding penalties from clients due to our supplier and or subcontractors who tried many times to rip us of, to be honest it is a tough job, being a project guy in multinational company and interfacing with variety of professional came from multi nations. Yet I found it interesting and challenging, in its way to diversify our character being adaptive and subtlety. Of course conflict occur happens and it is normal, what is not normal if you run your project management in smooth pattern, which I find hard to believe happens in realistic life. This article, I would like to share to readers that in “meditate” or being, is a define state of mind in just being, not to think or to expect, that doesn’t mean we are empty head. It’s the state of cool awareness that I learn from my supervisor, during those tough times he never seem panic or tense, always cool.

So  I ask a silly question to him, “What’s the secret boss?’, he only smiles and says softly just being present and only focusing at “moment” the now, that phrase looks awkward to me, since I did not know the true depth meaning, either way I also practice martial arts for years and having to realize and many times my teacher in martial arts says ‘be cool’, meditative, in my head always trying to analyze this or that , what will happen if..? and so on …many minds.

One time I was caught by my supervisor during a tough meeting my mind was floating around trying to anticipate the problems that at the end will and or may not happen, and I was yelled by my boss, that I should only to focus on what he guided, you can’t think all the possibility, it’s in this “now” situation or discussions I should pay attention and do your best, the end result we should not worry, the answer will come up instant moment before the things happens.

After 10 years gone, and I contemplate and meditate myself I could really grasp and understand what he meant those time, just like when you practice martial arts, i.e. given example Aikido, after practicing 10 years I could understand that you just concentrate on the “first take” or initial attack by your partner, at the very precise moment before the attacks hits, you already know the answer and the Universe will take care of it, this philosophy if I survey too many practitioner of martial arts  still doing fighting choreograph trying to look good and thinking always the ending technique, into forms which is alright but after years of training you must grasp the essence, to be in stage of not thinking too much or many minds i.e. like Tom Cruise movie “The Last Samurai”.

Believe me if you put up this practice, the correct one , not only you will gain benefit training in your arts, in daily life and office work you will be more relax and calm and even if tough times in office or you have a tough boss, you will definitely having the intuitive answer that will shock them. Watch Out Your Body Alignment!

The most important of healthy living naturally and holistic remedies, are not only from our regular intake. The habitual of your overall body posture also significantly affect your health in long term. These days as we cannot work without computer or laptop, even for personal use, one of the very basic illnesses comes during working in office and sitting in front of your laptop or computers. Never under estimate the syndrome in your eyes, back spine or even your hands when clicking a mouse.

Every job that applied in office building and field has the same risk, either way the field worker are more alert, yet the awareness to avoid the illness has the same priority.

An example given from real life experience I read in a magazine, a presenter has syndrome illness when she worked in a coffined space with AC, outlook of her office, elevation of the table, chair and computers have caused of it.

Afterward she made a drastically change on the layout office based on the health practitioners, and it was healthy living for her lifestyle.

Syndrome or symptoms health in confine space, usually happen to people who never or the incumbent is station on the office, different than marketing people that are mobile. The sickness is called “Sick Building Syndrome”. A deposit of illness syndrome occurs to people who have been working too long in office.

The symptoms can be identified by fatigue easily, acute pain all over body, sleepy, laziness and bore tired. It also caused by the layout office is not according to health for amount of people to breath healthy, ventilation can not overcome the exhaust required to an exchange of fresh air,

Ergonomic Intervene

Utilizing an extensive time in front of computers without the right body alignment position can also inflicted the health of person’s. It is called by symptoms “repetitive motion injury”, i.e. much case given example as follow

  1. Not in a right body alignment position when talking in the phone, or spinning around
  2. Not putting utensils in a right position and giving the attitude to” reach out over extensive” when you need them, can also causing pain
  3. Size of the chair that creates a bad posture to your back spine and the posture inflicted to your daily habits, over time period becomes sickness.

If this ergonomic function is not well taken care of, it will disrupt the food supply to our body, since our muscle and nerve not having the right circulation, at some point it will clogged and causing acute pain or injury.

What should we do about it?

1. Do stretching before going to office.

2. Do light stretching ergonomic exercise before going to lunch, with the main point to relax your back spine, make it straight, neck, head, shoulder, legs and arms don’t forget fingers too. It is good to rest and relax from the computer work every 1hour for 1-2 minutes just to give your muscles some flexibilities and avoid eye strain.

3. Practice breathing naturally while working in front of computer.

Even in their walk, so gracefully, they are in the state of meditating. I read about walking meditation in a health magazine. A walk can release your stress and letting go your negative emotions. And, we can also meditate in our walking, that’s why it is called walking meditation.

Depression Treatment: Tricks & Tips

Do you live in a house near the main street?

I bet you often experience the noise from the hectic vehicles everyday. This can make you depression due to the noisy sound above normal level.

If you happen to live at a house or residence near big street, or your residence is in front of Main Street as I do, the noise of traffic almost 20 hours a day would increase your depression, find the symptoms on how you are increasing the depressions.

  1. Your head is about to explode.
  2. Mood changes quickly, it’s like mood swing
  3. Blood pressure tends to boils
  4. Becoming easy on irritating.

The solution is not moving your house, if you can not afford to but being adaptive to the noise and treat them as harmony music in your life rhythm as we were doing meditations, this kind of exercise will neutralize the effect on the symptoms above. Please try as you will first feel a little bit uneasy when you go to a vacation on mountain and since the quiet silence that you may not hear every day, that was the author feeling.

Subsequently you notice that you become one with the noise, by practicing meditation to adapt the worst situation in your life is not easy, after doing it you will know that this will make your life healthier, by the way there is no perfect conditions in this life, since we all know we are not living in a perfect world, are you just “doing” or “being” in this life will depend on your daily activity.

Now let’s get back on living relax on noisy atmosphere, one thing you can do is have a pet a cat or dog, will reduce your noisy stress. If by any chance you are the kind of persons that working at home as away of life, having a pet is a good way to overcoming that mood swing.

Drink water on 8 - 10 glass daily to keep fresh, exercise on jogging or skipping.

Or you can do the installing the wall acoustic and put Air Conditions as this will reduce noise although not completely gone. Please have a try and let me know what you think
